Diversity: Identity and Integration

Workshop in collaboration with the SRH Centre for Languages and Diversity

In this interactive workshop, students will discover their Identity and Integration by working on the following topics:

  • dynamics of plural collectives
  • strategies of integration
  • change of perspective

At the end of the workshop, the students will be both more self-aware and able to perceive and meet people's different backgrounds and needs. This will prepare them for interacting effectively in a globalized world.

Life in the German Democratic Republic

A sneak peek behind the Berlin Wall

Between 1949 and 1990 the eastern part of Germany was a country of its own called German Democratic Republic (GDR), and was part of the Eastern communist bloc in the Cold War and.  Not only was Germany as a country, but also today´s capital city, Berlin, was divided, although geographically located entirely in the East. What initially was just a political separation, became an actual wall between the West and East side of Berlin from 1961 to 1989.

In this workshop you will learn about the everyday life in the eastern part of Germany during the GDR: how were food, music, buildings, the school system different from the rest of Germany?

You will also get an exclusive insight in the early life of our guest speaker: Wolf Kampmann, a music journalist, writer and part-time Pop-history teacher at SRH Berlin School of Popular Arts, who grew up in the GDR. As a conscientious objector to the regime, he experienced all the light and dark sides of the GDR and will share these with us.
You will not only listen, but also get the chance to travel through history: the workshop will end with a digital scavenger hunt that will take you and your team in a journey through the GDR.

For Master students: this workshop within the Virtual World Tour can be validated as one activity for the Diversity Training Programme (the participation certificate will need to be submitted at the Centre for Languages and Diversity).
