Foreign and Foreignness - An Artistic Research Project

“Foreign & Foreignness” is an art and research project developed by the Berlin School of Design and Communication and the Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts with the participation of students and instructors from Germany, Lebanon and other countries.

Due to the high number of refugees from Syria, who came to Germany and Lebanon in the years 2015 and 2016, a scientific-aesthetic discussion leading to creative approaches became highly relevant to better understand the subject of “Foreign and Foreignness”. In the context of interdisciplinary workshops in Beirut and Berlin, essays, films, photo series, graphics and installations were produced by students of both universities which in conjunction with the research results illustrate the wide spectrum of the controversial subject of “Foreign and Foreignness”.

The photographs, graphics and illustrations included in the book were created by students of the artistic study programmes. The texts were created by professors from the cooperating universities Berlin School of Design and Communication of SRH Berlin University of Applied Sciences and ALBA Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts of the Université de Balamand.

Prof. Gilbert Beronneau is responsible for the management of the university cooperation as well as editor and author of the artefakte publication series.

A print version with thread binding, four-color offset printing (artefakte 01, 1st edition 2018; 132 p.; ISBN 978-3-942648-38-7) can be purchased by contacting Prof. Beronneau directly (gilbert.beronneau@srh.de).
