What you will learn

The Master's in Computing and the Arts focuses on creative coding and programming, multimedia applications, interfaces, installations and performances in an artistic environment. You will hone your practical skills, art and design practices and get everything you need to distinguish yourself as an artist and coder. Collaborative, practice-oriented and interdisciplinary, you will not only develop your soft skills in a team with your fellow students, but also experience the various dimensions of co-creativity in digital art.

After successfully graduating with a state-approved degree you will be able to handle all legal and budgetary, environmental, time and space constraints to show your work either in a professional context or an art setting (i.e. exhibition). Your projects and works are prepared for real life exhibition using your advanced knowledge in creation of interactive installations, 3D computer graphics, scenography, virtual and augmented reality, realisation and maintenance of hard and software systems, market research, conceptualisation and budgeting.

1. Semester

In three 5-weeks units of working in your very profession, working in a teammate's profession and finally working together to create different artefacts, we will guide you to reflect critically, work out your own strengths, learn from others and take on responsibility. Exploration, experimentation, rethinking approaches, networking and finding new perspectives are the focus. In this unit you will also learn about the conceptualisation of projects and the different agile working methods. 

Along the way, you will acquire important skills and knowledge in design methods, audiovisual and team-based programming, aesthetic and media history, (rapid) prototyping, audiovisual algorithms, user interfaces and interaction, presentation and conceptualisation.

2. Semester

In three 5-weeks units of drafting, planning and carrying out new concepts and projects, you will experience the shaping of your soft skills, such as ethical consciousness, power of observation, change of perspective, empathy and motivation. In a real life studio atmosphere, your critical ability will also be developed. 

You will enhance your professional expertise and methodological skills in creative programming, media psychology, interactive net-based technology, design thinking, conceptualisation and presentation and audio programming concepts. Another important topic will be DSP - basics as well as applications.

3. Semester

The 5-week units are now three large steps to your final presentation. Teamwork means now not only working together successfully, but balancing your own creative identity and your teams vision, responsibility for self-management and teamwork, self-reflection and resolving conflicts.

You are going to practice handling legal, budgetary, environmental, time and space constraints to show the work you have done in a larger context, in public space and in cooperation with external partners. Your artefacts and projects are going to be prepared for real life exhibition using your advanced knowledge in creation of interactive installations, 3D computer graphics, scenography, virtual and augmented reality, realisation and maintenance of hard and software systems, market research, conceptualisation and budgeting, as well as filing funding requests for your work.

4. Semester

The grand finale

In your final semester you will be working towards your Master's thesis and finally you will complete your studies with a state-approved degree.

Admission requirements
Our requirements

The MA in Computing and the Arts is aimed at applicants with a first degree in music, audio or visual design, in media arts or others. It is a non-consecutive master's programme. We will specifically be looking for a strong motivation to express yourself and to design as well as for a solid understanding of computer-based realisation of sound or design. Skills in either visual or audio programming are recommended, even though you do not need to master C++. What really counts is your passion to express your ideas in audio-visual concepts.

Fees and Funding
Your tuition fees

As a state-recognised, private university, the Berlin School of Popular Arts is financed by tuition fees. This revenue goes towards equipping our campus, providing services for our students, and quality assurance. In this way we ensure that you receive the best possible education under optimal study conditions.

Tuition fees

  • citizenship | EU/EEA (incl. Switzerland, Western Balkans): EUR 680 / month
  • citizenship | Non-EU/EEA: EUR 5400 / semester

The monthly/semester tuition fees remain the same for the entire duration of the study programme. 

An additional enrolment fee of EUR 500 (EU/EEA) / EUR 900 (non-EU/EEA) is to be paid once at the start of the programme.

Application process and deadlines

We are happy to welcome you to our university. This is our application process:

  1. You submit your online application via the our SRH Application Portal.
  2. If you meet the admission requirements, we will invite you to a personal/phone interview
  3. If the interview is successful, you will receive an acceptance letter and the study contract
  4. You will sign the study contract and send it back to us
  5. You pay the enrolment fee (all students) and – if you are a non-EU/non-EEA student – the 3-month deposit
  6. You will receive your letter of admission
  7. You will take part in our Welcome Week and then you are good to go!
